Frequently Asked Questions...

What is AYSO soccer and what commitments are involved?

AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth soccer opportunities for children of all skill levels and backgrounds. The program focuses on developing players’ skills, fostering teamwork, and promoting positive sportsmanship in a fun, inclusive environment. AYSO runs soccer leagues for kids starting in the spring of their pre-K 3 year all the way through senior year of high school (so basically, ages 4-19 ish).

As for commitments, players and their families should expect the following:

  • Season Duration: The typical AYSO season lasts 8 weeks with two seasons per school year (spring and fall)
  • Practice Commitment: Players attend practice once a week for 45 min-1 hour on Saturdays at parks around Pleasantville
  • Game Commitment: Games are typically held once a week on Sunday afternoons
  • Volunteer Commitment: AYSO is a volunteer-driven organization, so parents and guardians are expected to help with team management, field setup, and other roles throughout the season.
Why isn't it letting me register my child for the correct age group?

We are limited by the system! Register for what they will allow you to, and then e-mail [email protected] and we will make the switch manually!

My child isn't old enough to play, but they're so close to the cut off and they've got their life together-can we make an exception?

Sadly, no-all children need to play with their correct grade for insurance purposes.

What are the core values of AYSO?
  • Everyone Plays® – Every player on every team must play at least 50 percent of every game. Spending the game on the bench is no way to learn soccer!
  • Balanced Teams – Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible. This allows for each player to gain experience from a wide variety of teammates and different skill levels.
  • Open Registration – Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing. There are no elimination try-outs and nobody gets cut.
  • Positive Coaching – AYSO requires our coaches to create a positive experience for every player.
  • Good Sportsmanship – We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude.
  • Player Development – We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game.
Our family cannot afford to cover the fee for AYSO-what can we do?
No problem! E-mail Beth Seward at [email protected] and we will provide a coupon for you to reduce or cover the fee-no questions asked and confidentiality guaranteed.

Do I need to stay at the field?
Yes! If your child is in second grade or younger this is not a drop off activity. If they are in third grade or older, you are not required to stay, but you must be at the field a few minutes before practice ends to grab your child.

Can I be in on the field?
This is a big, fat NO unless you are registered in the system. All AYSO volunteers require a background check. If you are not registered to coach, but your child is having a hard time, we kindly ask that you take them off the field to help them as opposed to joining them (this is another reason to sign up to coach, especially if you think your child might have a hard time).

Finally, this program is run by parents in the community who have kids, jobs, homes, and lots of other responsibilities. Please be mindful that this isn't our full time job-we don't get paid for this nor do we get any discount for our children. We are doing this because we believe in the importance of affordable recreational soccer for the children in Pleasantville.
